How to use it
Expresses regret for NOT having done (or for having done) something. Talks about one's own action.
- 「Vばよかった」 = if only I had done it. In fact, I did NOT do it: 「もっと早く起きればよかった」.
- Conversely, 「Vなければよかった」 = if only I hadn't done it — in fact, I did do it: 「あんなことを言わなければよかった」.
- Adding 「のに」 to make 「~ばよかったのに」 is used to blame someone else: 「早く言ってくれればよかったのに」 (why didn't you tell me sooner).
Examples
もっと早く起きればよかった。
I should have gotten up earlier.
あんなことを言わなければよかった。
I wish I hadn’t said something like that.
Keep in mind
- Conjugate the ば form: 「起きれば」, and for い-adjectives 「安ければ」.
- When blaming someone else, add 「のに」.
