How to use it
The colloquial contraction of 「~てしまった」: something happened unintentionally with regret — or something was finished neatly.
- Contraction rule: 「~てしまった」 → 「~ちゃった」, 「~でしまった」 → 「~じゃった」. Note that verbs with a voiced te-form (飲んで・読んで) become 「じゃった」.
- Same two nuances as 「てしまった」: REGRET (「財布をなくしちゃった」) and COMPLETION (「全部読んじゃった」).
- This is casual, colloquial speech — in writing and with superiors, use the full form 「~てしまいました」.
Examples
寝坊して、学校に遅刻しちゃった。
I overslept and ended up being late for school.
ケーキを全部食べちゃった。
I ended up eating the whole cake.
Keep in mind
- Only verbs with the で form become 「じゃった」: 「読んじゃった」, not 「読んちゃった」.
- Not used in formal written Japanese.
Common mistakes

Wrong牛乳を飲んちゃった。
I accidentally drank all the milk.
Correct牛乳を飲んじゃった。
Verbs with a de-form (飲んで) contract to 「じゃった」.
-

Correct(報告書に)資料をなくしてしまいました。
Formal writing must use the full form 「てしまいました」.
