How to use it
Asks permission to do something the speaker wants to do. The subject of the action is the SPEAKER, not the listener.
- 「~(さ)せてください」 = please let me do it. The doer is oneself: 「もう一度説明させてください」.
- Don't confuse it with 「~てください」 (asking SOMEONE ELSE to do it): 「説明してください」 asks the other person to explain — the meaning is completely opposite.
- For a more polite version, use 「~(さ)せていただけませんか」 — the most formal level in this group.
Examples
Please let me explain once more.
I'm not feeling well, so please let me leave early today.
Keep in mind
- Must first conjugate to the causative form: 「帰らせて」, not 「帰ってください」.
- The speaker is the one performing the action.
Common mistakes
-
Wrong
Please let me photocopy this document.
Correct
To ask PERMISSION to do it oneself, one must use the causative form (~させてください); 「私が~してください」 still asks the LISTENER to perform it — adding the subject 「私が」 doesn't change the nature of 「してください」.
-
Wrong
Please let me go home.
Correct
The causative form of 「帰る」 is 「帰らせる」— a wrong okurigana spot is a common mistake.
Exam tips
- 「(さ)せてください」 = please let ME do it; the more polite version is 「させていただけませんか」.
