How to use it

Describes two quantities changing in the same direction: as the degree of A increases, the degree of B increases along with it.

  • 「~ば~ほど」 expresses that the degree of B changes IN PROPORTION to the degree of A: the more A, the more B. The same word is repeated in the 「ば」 form and the 「ほど」 form.
  • Verb: Vば + Vる + ほど. i-adjective: ~ければ + ~い + ほど. na-adjective: ~なら + ~な + ほど.
  • Emphasizes a proportional relationship, usually describing a trend.

Examples

  • The more you practice, the better you get.

  • The more I think about it, the less I understand.

  • The more you practice Japanese, the better you get.

Keep in mind

  • The standard form keeps both 「ば」 and 「ほど」.
  • な-adjectives use 「なほど」 in the second clause.

Common mistakes

  • Wrong高(たか)いば高(たか)いほど、いい。

    The more expensive, the better.

    Correct高(たか)ければ高(たか)いほど、いい。

The conditional form of an i-adjective is 「ければ」 (高ければ), not 「いば」.

  • Wrong練習(れんしゅう)するほどすれば、上手(じょうず)になる。

The more you practice, the better you get.

    Correct練習(れんしゅう)すればするほど、上手(じょうず)になる。

The correct structure is 「Vば + Vるほど」 (すればするほど); do not reverse the order.

  • Wrongこの店(みせ)は便利(べんり)ければ便利(べんり)いほどいいです。

The more convenient the shop, the better.

    Correctこの店(みせ)は便利(べんり)なら便利(べんり)なほどいいです。

便利 is a NA-adjective and does not conjugate like an i-adjective. You must use なら + な + ほど.

  • Wrong日本語(にほんご)を勉強(べんきょう)すればするほど、明日(あした)試験(しけん)を受(う)けます。

The more I study Japanese, the more I take the exam tomorrow.

    Correct日本語(にほんご)を勉強(べんきょう)すればするほど、自信(じしん)がつきます。

The second clause must be a change WITH DEGREE. "Taking the exam tomorrow" is a fixed fact that cannot increase or decrease.

Exam tips

  • Repeat the same word in the 「ば」 form and the 「ほど」 form; conjugate the adjective's conditional form correctly (「ければ」).
