How to use it
Assigns A a CAPACITY or role B. B is a noun denoting a role, purpose, or standard.
- 「N1をN2として」 = treating N1 as N2: 「彼をリーダーとして、チームを作った」「国際交流を目的として設立された」.
- N2 is the CAPACITY assigned to N1, so the two nouns must not overlap in meaning — 「教師を職業として働く」 sounds redundant; 「教師として働く」 alone is enough.
- As a modifier, use 「をN2とする+N」: 「学生を対象とする調査」.
Examples
チームは彼をリーダーとして、新しい計画を始めた。
The team started a new project with him as leader.
この団体は国際交流を目的として設立された。
This organization was founded for the purpose of international exchange.
Keep in mind
- N2 is the capacity/purpose, must not overlap in meaning with N1.
- As a modifier, use 「とする+N」.
Common mistakes
-
Wrong彼は教師を職業として働いている。
He works in the capacity of a teacher.
Correct彼は教師として働いている。
「教師」 already denotes an occupation, so adding 「職業として」 is redundant.
-
Wrong学生を対象として調査は先月行われた。
A survey targeting students was conducted last month.
Correct学生を対象とする調査は先月行われた。
To modify a noun, use 「とする」, not the て form 「として」.
