How to use it
Sets aside matter A to focus on B — B is what the speaker actually wants to say.
- 「AはともかくB」 = setting A aside for now, as for B… 「デザインはともかく、機能はこの機種が一番だ」 (design aside, in terms of function this model is the best).
- A is something that doesn't need discussing yet or has an issue; B is the actual focus — reversing the two clauses breaks the meaning.
- Close to 「~は別として」 (setting aside entirely). Only attaches to a noun or a nominalized question 「行くかどうかはともかく」.
Examples
デザインはともかく、機能はこの機種が一番だ。
Design aside, this model is the best in terms of function.
行くかどうかはともかく、まず値段を調べよう。
Whether we go or not aside, let us first check the price.
Keep in mind
- The focus is on the SECOND clause.
- Only attaches to a noun or noun phrase.
Common mistakes
-
Wrong値段はともかく、値段が高くて買えない。
Setting aside the price, the price is too expensive so I can't buy it.
Correctデザインはともかく、値段が高くて買えない。
The topic set aside (値段) must not be repeated in the second clause; the two clauses must talk about TWO different aspects.
-
Wrong安いはともかく、品質がいい。
Setting the price aside, the quality is good.
Correct値段はともかく、品質がいい。
Only attaches to a noun, not a bare adjective.
