How to use it
An emotion surges up and the speaker cannot hold back an action. The subject is a person, and it leans toward emotion.
- 「Vずにはいられない」 = cannot help but do: 「あの映画を見ると、泣かずにはいられない」.
- Follows the same connection rule as 「ざるを得ない」: drop 「ない」, and 「する → せずに」.
- Different from 「ざるを得ない」: that pattern is caused by circumstances that FORCE the action, while this pattern is caused by an inner EMOTION that cannot be held back.
Examples
Whenever I watch that movie, I cannot help crying.
When I see someone in trouble, I cannot help lending a hand.
Keep in mind
- The subject is a person; when talking about someone else, use 「~
Common mistakes
-
Wrong
Since the deadline is near, I have no choice but to work overtime.
Correct
Use 「ざるを得ない」 when forced by circumstances; this pattern is for emotions.
-
Wrong
Whenever I watch this movie, I cannot help laughing.
Correct
Attaches to the ない form with 「ない」 dropped (「笑わ」), not the masu-stem.
Exam tips
- 「ずにはいられない」 = cannot hold back (EMOTION); for being forced, use 「ざるを得ない」.
