How to use it

Adds a CONDITION or exception to something just permitted. Regulatory writing, notices, contracts.

  • 「ただし」 = on the condition that. A permits something, and B narrows its scope: 「この部屋を使ってもいいです。
  • Very common in written notices: 「
  • Different from 「ただ」 (a mild personal remark): 「ただし」 is regulatory and binding.

Examples

  • You may use this room. However, please clean up after using it.

  • Admission is free. However, prior registration is required.

Keep in mind

  • B is a condition/exception, not a personal impression.
  • Regulatory written style.

Common mistakes

The food is good. The only thing is, I find it a bit pricey.

A personal impression uses 「ただ」; 「ただし」 is for a regulatory condition.

You may use it. And, well, you may also clean up.

The second clause must be a restriction, not another permission.

Exam tips

  • 「ただし」 = on the condition that (regulatory); use 「ただ」 for a personal remark.
