How to use it
Used in formal style when preparing for, starting, or facing an event or task that is special and significant.
- 「~にあたって」 states a milestone circumstance or moment, then presents the preparation, attitude, or action tied to that milestone. The pattern is commonly found in announcements, speeches, and formal writing.
- The first clause is usually something not yet completed at the time of speaking, such as opening a branch, starting a project, or entering a new phase. For this reason, the pattern does not naturally go with the past form 「Vた」 or the negative 「Vない」.
- 「~にあたり」 is more formal and leans toward written language. 「~際に」 has a broader range of use, while 「~にあたって」 usually implies this is an important occasion involving active preparation.
Examples

卒業論文の執筆にあたり、指導してくださった先生方に感謝申し上げます。
In writing my graduation thesis, I would like to express my gratitude to the professors who guided me.
Keep in mind
- Both spellings 「にあたって」 and 「に当たって」 exist; in its role as a function phrase, the hiragana spelling is very common.
- Not naturally used for a small, repeated daily habit unless there's a deliberate intent to elevate it into a special occasion.
Common mistakes
-
Wrong毎朝起きるにあたって、水を一杯飲みます。
Every morning when I wake up, I drink a glass of water.
Correct海外勤務を始めるにあたって、現地の生活習慣を調べました。
「にあたって」 fits a significant milestone involving preparation; it does not fit an ordinary routine like waking up every morning.
-
Wrong新しい支店を開設したにあたって、需要を調査した。
When opening the new branch, we surveyed demand.
Correct新しい支店を開設するにあたって、需要を調査した。
The verb before 「にあたって」 uses the dictionary form to state an event about to take place; it does not use the past form 「Vた」.
Exam tips
- If all the options mean "when," check the level of formality, the significance of the event, and whether the second clause implies preparation.
