How to use it
Keeping a state throughout: from birth, crying while speaking, in the old way. Learned as fixed phrases.
- 「~ながらに」 = while in that state. Nearly fixed phrases: 生まれながらに (from birth) ・涙ながらに (through tears)・昔ながらの (just as in the old days)・居ながらにして (while sitting in one place).
- To modify a noun, use 「ながらの」: 「昔ながらの方法」「生まれながらの才能」.
- Do not confuse with the concessive 「~ながら(も)」 ("although..."): 「知っていながら黙っていた」. Same character 「ながら」 but a completely different function.
Examples
彼は生まれながらに音楽の才能があった。
He had musical talent from birth.
昔ながらの方法で作っています。
It is made using a traditional method.
Keep in mind
- Attaches to the masu-stem or a noun: 「生まれながらに」, not 「生まれるながらに」.
- The list of fixed phrases is very short — memorize them whole instead of combining freely.
Common mistakes
-
Wrong生まれるながらに才能がある。
Correct生まれながらに才能がある。
For verbs, attach to the ます stem: 生まれます → 生まれながらに.
Exam tips
- 「ながらに」 = keeping a state (生まれながらに・涙ながらに); the modifying form is 「ながらの」.
