A very polite request, used with a superior or a stranger.

• Formation: いただく (humble form of もらう) → potential form いただける → negative question いただけませんか. The literal meaning is "could I possibly receive the favor of you doing ~?"
• Why is the NEGATIVE form more polite than the affirmative? Because asking in the negative leaves the other person room to decline, without pressuring them. This is a logic that runs throughout polite Japanese, quite different from Vietnamese.
• The politeness scale for requests, from casual to formal: ～て → ～てくれない？ → ～てください → ～てくれませんか → ～ていただけませんか → ～ていただけないでしょうか.
• Context: asking a boss, teacher, customer, stranger. Using this pattern with a friend sounds like you're upset with them or being sarcastic.

• すみませんが、もう一度(いちど)説明(せつめい)していただけませんか。

  Excuse me, could you explain it one more time?

• この漢字(かんじ)の読(よ)み方(かた)を教(おし)えていただけませんか。

  Could you tell me how to read this kanji?

• 明日(あした)までに返事(へんじ)をいただけないでしょうか。

  Would it be possible to receive your reply by tomorrow?

ข้อควรจำ

• The beneficiary is ME — that's why いただく (humble) is used. If a superior does it for me on their own initiative, use くださる (N4-075) instead.
• Adding すみませんが or 申し訳ありませんが at the beginning of the sentence sounds much more natural than diving straight into the request.

ข้อผิดพลาดที่พบบ่อย

• ผิด先生(せんせい)、この本(ほん)を貸(か)していただけませんですか。

  Teacher, could you please lend me this book?

  ถูก先生(せんせい)、この本(ほん)を貸(か)していただけませんか。

  いただけません is already the ます-negative form; don't add です on top of it.

• ผิด友達(ともだち)に「ペンを貸(か)していただけませんか」と言(い)いました。

  I said to my friend, "Could you lend me a pen?"

  ถูก友達(ともだち)に「ペン貸(か)してくれない？」と言(い)いました。

  This pattern is too formal for friends — it sounds distant. With a friend, use ～てくれない？.
