วิธีใช้

Used at the end of a sentence in casual conversation to make an observation, point out something obvious to the listener, or offer natural praise (equivalent to ~じゃないか with falling intonation).

  • 「~じゃん」 is a colloquial contraction of 「~じゃないか」 (originating in Kanto/Yokohama dialect and now widespread in everyday spoken Japanese nationwide), used when the speaker notices or points out something obvious right in front of them: “Isn’t it…!”, “See, that’s fine!”.
  • Unlike a genuine negative question, 「~じゃん」 is usually spoken with falling intonation or light final stress to express agreement or praise (「いいじゃん!」— Hey, that’s great!) or to remind the listener of something they forgot (「昨日言ったじゃん」— Didn’t I tell you yesterday?).
  • Do not insert 「だ」 right before 「じゃん」 after nouns or na-adjectives: say 「雨じゃん」「元気じゃん」, not 「×雨だじゃん」.
  • PRAGMATIC WARNING: This is very casual speech (register: casual), used only with friends, family, or close peers. NEVER use it with superiors, clients, elders, or in formal workplace settings (where you must switch to 「~ではないですか」 or state it politely with 「~ですね」).

ตัวอย่าง

  • Hey, this is really good for the price, isn’t it?

  • Look, the key is right there on the desk, isn’t it?

  • Didn’t I clearly tell you yesterday that tomorrow’s meeting time is nine o’clock?

ข้อควรจำ

  • With rising intonation at the end of a sentence, 「~じゃん?」 can be used among friends to ask for light confirmation, though falling intonation for assertion is far more common.
  • Never use 「~じゃん」 in standard written Japanese, news articles, business emails, or essays.

ข้อผิดพลาดที่พบบ่อย

  • ผิด外(そと)を見(み)たら、もう雨(あめ)だじゃん。

Looking outside, it's already raining, isn't it?

    ถูก外(そと)を見(み)たら、もう雨(あめ)じゃん。

Nouns attach directly to 「じゃん」 without inserting 「だ」 in between (do not say 「雨だじゃん」).

  • ผิดこの部屋(へや)、広(ひろ)くて静(しず)かだじゃん。

This room is both spacious and quiet, isn't it?

    ถูกこの部屋(へや)、広(ひろ)くて静(しず)かじゃん。

    Drop 「だ」 after a na-adjective before adding 「じゃん」 (say 「静かじゃん」, not 「静かだじゃん」).

  • ผิด部長(ぶちょう)、今回(こんかい)の企画(きかく)書(しょ)はすごくいいじゃん。

Section Chief, this plan is pretty great, isn't it?

    ถูก部長(ぶちょう)、今回(こんかい)の企画(きかく)書(しょ)はとても良(よ)い内容(ないよう)ですね。

「~じゃん」 is casual speech and must not be used when commenting to a superior such as a department manager (部長); in the workplace, use the polite form 「~ですね」.

เทคนิคการสอบ

  • In JLPT N3 Listening (聴解), 「~じゃん」 appears very frequently in conversations between friends to express mild surprise or remind someone of known information.
  • In sentence grammar questions, watch out for the rule dropping 「だ」 after nouns and na-adjectives before 「じゃん」.
