- 「~ところに」 marks a moment/situation in progress, and right at that moment another event BURSTS IN. The clause after is usually unexpected, unplanned.
- The clause after usually has a verb of appearing/arriving/calling (来る, 電話がかかる, 声をかけられる).
- Close in meaning to 「~ところへ」; 「へ」 emphasizes direction, 「に」 emphasizes the point in time — in practice they're used almost interchangeably.
ตัวอย่าง

ข้อควรจำ
- Different from 「Vているところだ」 (which only marks a point in time): 「ところに」 always has a second event interrupting.
ข้อผิดพลาดที่พบบ่อย
-

Just as I left the house, the weather was nice.
ถูก出かけたところに、雨が降ってきた。
The clause after 「ところに」 must be an EVENT that bursts in (rain falling), not a static state (nice weather).
