What You Can Do with a My Number Card

One plastic card with a chip can serve as a health insurance card, print certificates at a convenience store and file taxes online. But it also needs care.

What You Can Do with a My Number Card
  • Every resident of Japan has a 12-digit number (My Number); the card is a photo card with a chip.
  • It serves as ID, health insurance card, convenience-store certificate printing and e-filing of taxes.
  • Do not show the number needlessly or post it online; report a lost card at once.

My Number and the card

My Number is a 12-digit number assigned to each person who has an address in Japan. Foreign residents with a resident record also receive a number.

The number is used for tax, social security and disaster procedures, to connect information that government offices had held separately.

The "My Number card" is a card with this number, a face photo and an IC chip. People who want one apply for it themselves.

The earlier paper notification card is no longer newly issued. Knowing the number alone does not prove identity, so be careful.

What the card can do

Because it has a photo, it works as ID in situations where you must prove who you are, such as banks and phone contracts.

At hospitals and pharmacies it can be used as a health insurance card. You place it on the reception machine and confirm with a PIN or your face.

At a convenience-store machine you can print documents such as a resident record or seal certificate without going to the office. It is handy at night and on days off.

With "e-Tax" you can file taxes from a computer or phone. Many people find the annual tax return easier.

Depending on the city, there are services where it replaces a library card or earns points. Check the information for where you live.

How to get one and what to watch

You can apply from a phone, a computer or a photo machine in town. It usually takes a few weeks to be ready.

You often have to go to city hall to pick it up. Bring your residence card and the notification paper. If your address changes, you need to update it.

A foreign resident's card has a validity period tied to the period of stay. When you renew your visa, do not forget the card procedure too.

Except for purposes set by law, you must not tell others your My Number or collect it. Posting a photo on social media is especially dangerous.

If you lose the card, call the call center at once to have it blocked. Report it to the police as well.

If you enter the PIN wrongly a few times, the card gets locked. Do not use numbers others can guess, such as your birthday.

Until now, procedures at government offices in Japan required many documents and seals. The card was created to reduce that trouble.

Even so, the places and procedures where it works are still increasing. It is not true that "this one card handles everything", so check when you need it.

When my company needed a resident record, I was able to get it at a convenience store at night, which helped a lot.

When you move, the procedure of submitting a "notice of moving out" at the office can sometimes be done online if you have the card.
