Recalled Iwatani Gas Torch Catches Fire and Canister Bursts — 3 Taken to Hospital, Only 57.9% of Units Recovered
  • On October 14, 2026, Japan's Consumer Affairs Agency reported a September 18, 2026 fire in Tokyo: a gas torch under recall caught fire at its connection, the cassette canister burst, and 3 people with minor injuries were taken to hospital; the cause is under investigation.
  • The recalled product is the "Iwatani Oryori Burner Pro III" (model CB-TC-CPRO3); 35,368 units were sold from December 2013 to December 2014, and the defect is under-tightened screws at the canister connection that can leak gas and cause fires.
  • Iwatani has offered free collection and replacement since December 11, 2014, but only 57.9% had been recovered as of July 2, 2026; owners should stop using it and call 0120-156-269 (toll-free, 9:00–17:00 on weekdays).

A gas canister burst while a torch was in use

On October 14, 2026, Japan's Consumer Affairs Agency announced 19 serious product accidents, including one involving a gas torch that is already under recall.

On September 18, 2026, in Tokyo, a gas torch was being used with a cassette gas canister attached when fire broke out at the connection and the canister burst.

Three people suffered minor injuries in the fire and were taken to hospital by ambulance. The cause is still under investigation.

Which product is under recall

The recalled product is the "Iwatani Oryori Burner Pro III" cooking torch sold by Iwatani Corporation, model number CB-TC-CPRO3.

A total of 35,368 units were sold between December 2013 and December 2014.

If the screws at the canister connection are not tightened enough, gas can leak through the gap and cause a fire.

The company has been collecting and replacing the product free of charge since December 11, 2014, but as of July 2, 2026, the recovery rate was only 57.9%.

It is not yet known whether this accident was caused by the same defect behind the recall.
