  • Chiba Prefecture is securing rooms at private hotels and inns that are operating as usual, to serve as shelters for people affected by the August 2026 Chiba downpour and Typhoon No. 25; applications opened on October 7, 2026.
  • Eligibility is in principle for people currently staying at evacuation shelters, and only if their municipality is covered by the Disaster Relief Act; room charges are in principle paid from public funds, while meals and other costs are paid by the user.
  • You apply through the city or town where you live, not directly to the prefecture; you can stay until you have a clear prospect of your next home (including repairing your own house), for as long as the prefecture deems necessary.

Hotel rooms become shelters

Chiba Prefecture has decided to use rooms at hotels and Japanese inns (ryokan) as shelters for people affected by the August 2026 Chiba downpour and Typhoon No. 25.

Rather than renting whole buildings just for evacuees, the prefecture is reserving rooms at facilities that remain open for normal business.

Applications have been accepted since October 7, 2026.

Who can use it, and who pays

Eligibility is in principle for people currently staying at evacuation shelters, and applies only if the municipality where they live is covered by the Disaster Relief Act.

Room charges are in principle paid from public funds, but meals and other costs are paid by the user.

You can stay until you have a clear prospect of your next place to live (including repairing your own home), for the period the prefecture deems necessary.

How to apply

You don't apply to the prefecture directly: the city or town where you live asks about your wishes and takes the application.

After that, a company commissioned by the prefecture looks for a facility that can take you, and your municipality lets you know the result.
