When the Earthquake Early Warning Sounds, You Have Seconds — Here's What to Do

The weather agency is blunt: don't panic and run outside, and don't waste time trying to turn off the stove.

When the Earthquake Early Warning Sounds, You Have Seconds — Here's What to Do
  • The alert triggers when shaking of intensity 5-lower or above is forecast — you have anywhere from a few seconds to tens of seconds.
  • Indoors: protect your head, get under a sturdy table. Don't run outside, don't try to turn off the stove.
  • While driving: turn on your hazard lights, slow down gradually, don't brake suddenly.

What the early warning is

Your phone blares an odd alert. The screen shows the words "Earthquake Early Warning." You have only a few seconds left.

This alert is issued when seismic waves are detected at two or more observation points and the forecast shaking reaches intensity 5-lower or above.

The Japan Meteorological Agency doesn't announce "how many seconds are left," because the remaining time varies even within the same warning area. If you're near the epicenter, the shaking can arrive BEFORE the alert itself.

The basic principle the agency sets is just one line: depending on your surroundings, don't panic — first secure your own safety.

What to do right then

If you're indoors, protect your head and get under a sturdy table. Don't panic and rush outside — glass and walls can come falling down out there.

Don't force yourself to turn off the stove. Rushing toward the stove while the ground is shaking is one of the most common ways people get burned — it's fine to turn it off once the shaking stops.

In shops, stations, or malls, follow staff instructions. Rushing toward the exit is dangerous.

On trains and buses, hold firmly onto a strap or handrail. If you're in an elevator, stop it at the nearest floor and get out right away.

If you're walking outside, stay away from walls and fences, and watch for falling debris and landslides.

If you're driving, DON'T brake suddenly. Turn on your hazard lights to warn other cars, slow down gradually, and if the shaking is strong, pull over to the left side of the road and stop.

What the alert itself says

This is an Earthquake Early Warning. Please secure your own safety.
