How to use it

Describes a quality or property.

  • An i-adjective conjugates BY ITSELF — です is only added for politeness and carries no tense.
  • Past tense is 高かったです, NOT 高いでした — this is a classic mistake.
  • Before a noun it stays unchanged: 高い本.
  • EXCEPTION: いい (good) conjugates irregularly — よくない・よかった (not いくない・いかった).

Examples

  • This shop is cheap.

  • Yesterday’s movie was interesting.

Common mistakes

  • Wrong高(たか)いでした。

    It was expensive.

    Correct高(たか)かったです。

An i-adjective conjugates its own past tense (かった); it does not take でした.

  • Wrongいくないです。

    Not good.

    Correctよくないです。

いい conjugates irregularly — its negative is よくない.

Exam tips

  • 高いでした is a trap that shows up repeatedly in N5 exams.
