Quantity

How to use it

Estimating quantity or time, or stating a degree (including a low degree, "that's the least ~").

  • Use 1 — ESTIMATION: 「三十分ぐらいかかります」(it takes about 30 minutes). This is the most common way of giving an approximate quantity in conversation.
  • Use 2 — STATING A LOW DEGREE, implying "that's the least you could do": 「自分の部屋ぐらい掃除してください」(at least clean your own room). ほど does NOT carry this nuance — this is the second important distinguishing point after negative comparison.
  • A quick comparison with ほど: (a) negative comparison "not as ~ as" → only ほど; (b) belittling, "that's the least ~" → only くらい; (c) everyday quantity estimation → くらい sounds more natural, ほど more formal; (d) stating a strong degree (painful to the point of ~) → both work.
  • くらい and ぐらい are identical in meaning. In practice, Japanese speakers say ぐらい more often after a counted number (三つぐらい), while くらい is more common after この/その/あの (このくらい).

Examples

  • It takes about ten minutes to walk to the station.

  • At the very least, please clean your own room.

  • About how long do you study Japanese every day?

Keep in mind

  • Don't confuse this with ころ/ごろ: ごろ is used for a POINT IN TIME (三時ごろ — around 3 o'clock), くらい is used for an AMOUNT of time (三時間くらい — about 3 hours).
  • どのくらい = "about how much/how long" — a very commonly used question.

Common mistakes

    Let's meet at exactly 3 o'clock.

正確に (precisely) contradicts くらい (approximately, not exact) within the same sentence — if you want an exact time, drop くらい; if you want an approximate time, drop 正確に and use ごろ.

My younger brother isn't as tall as my older brother.

The negative comparison "not as ~ as" only uses ほど, not くらい.

Exam tips

  • Classic trap: 三時ごろ (around 3 o'clock) ↔ 三時間くらい (about 3 hours) — check whether 間 is present or not.
