How to use it
Do exactly the same as a model, an instruction, or something said. No deviation.
- Three ways to connect: 「Vたとおり」 (exactly as…), 「Nのとおり」, and the compound rendaku form 「Nどおり」: 予定どおり・計画どおり・時間どおり.
- 「Vるとおり」 is used when the event hasn't happened yet or is a general fact: 「ご存じのとおり」「私が言うとおりにしてください」.
- Add 「に」 when modifying a verb 「とおりに作る」; drop 「に」 when used as subject/predicate 「言ったとおりだ」.
Examples
先生が言ったとおりに宿題をやりました。
I did the homework exactly as the teacher said.
工事は予定どおりに終わりました。
The construction finished exactly as scheduled.
Keep in mind
- The compound form uses voicing: 「予定どおり」, not 「予定とおり」.
- A standalone noun needs 「の」: 「説明のとおり」.
Common mistakes
-
Wrong予定とおりに終わりました。
It was finished exactly according to plan.
Correct予定どおりに終わりました。
When attached directly to a noun, it undergoes rendaku to 「どおり」.
-
Wrong説明とおりにしてください。
Please follow the instructions exactly.
Correct説明のとおりにしてください。
A standalone noun must connect via 「の」.
Exam tips
- 「とおり」 = exactly as; 「Nどおり」 undergoes rendaku, 「Nのとおり」 keeps 「とおり」.
