How to use it
States that only AFTER going through A does one first realize/achieve B. Emphasizes the turning-point nature of the experience.
- 「~て初めて」 = only after going through A does B happen for the first time. The clause after is usually 「~が分かる/~に気づく」 — something only understood after the experience.
- Different from 「~てから」 (which just marks time sequence): 「て初めて」 emphasizes that BEFORE that, one had absolutely no idea.
- Close to 「~てこそ」 (N1), but 「て初めて」 emphasizes the first MOMENT of realization, while 「てこそ」 emphasizes the value of A.
Examples
親になって初めて、親の苦労が分かった。
Only after becoming a parent did I understand a parent’s hardship.
外国に住んで初めて、自分の文化に気づいた。
Only after living abroad did I notice my own culture.
Keep in mind
- Attaches to the て form, not the dictionary form.
- The following clause is a new realization/result, not a routine action.
Common mistakes
-
Wrong親になる初めて分かった。
Correct親になって初めて分かった。
Before 初めて in this pattern, the te-form must be used.
Exam tips
- 「て初めて」 = only after going through A does one first realize; different from 「てから」 (just sequence).
