|---|---|

How to use it
States a FORMAL aspect (law, figures, calendar), then implies reality may differ.
- 「Nの上では」 = on paper/in theory: 「暦の上ではもう春だが、まだ寒い」.
- The second clause very often has 「が/けれど」 stating the opposite reality — that is the characteristic nuance.
- Different from 「~上で」 (after doing something): 「確認した上で返事する」. Same character 「上」 but completely different.
Examples
On the calendar it is already spring, yet snow is still falling.
Legally speaking, his act is not illegal.
Keep in mind
- Only attaches to a noun.
- Often accompanied by a contrasting reality clause.
Common mistakes
-
Wrong
I will reply after I finish checking.
Correct
"After finishing, then…" is 「Vた上で」, different from this pattern.
-
Wrong
On the calendar it's already spring, but it's still cold.
Correct
You need to state what's "formally true" first, then contrast it with reality.
Exam tips
- 「の上では」 = on paper/in theory (reality often differs); different from 「Vた上で」.
