How to use it
The MODIFIER form of 「をはじめ」: comes before a noun to refer to the whole group, with N1 as the prominent representative.
- 「N1をはじめとするN2」 = N2 items represented by N1: 「フランス語をはじめとする外国語が話せる」.
- N1 must BELONG to the N2 group and be its most prominent member — if N1 doesn't belong to N2, the sentence is logically wrong.
- Three forms in the same family: 「をはじめ」 (short, adverbial) — 「をはじめとして」 (long, adverbial) — 「をはじめとする+N」 (modifier).
Examples
彼はフランス語をはじめとする外国語が話せる。

Keep in mind
- A noun must follow.
- N1 must be a member of the N2 group.
Common mistakes
-
Wrongこれはフランス語をはじめとして、外国語のリストだ。
This is a list of foreign languages, French above all.
Correctこれはフランス語をはじめとする外国語のリストだ。
To modify a following noun (here, "a list of foreign languages"), 「をはじめとする」 must be used, not 「をはじめとして」.

Wrong日本人の彼は、日本語をはじめとする外国語を勉強している。

Correct日本人の彼は、英語をはじめとする外国語を勉強している。
N1 must belong to the N2 group — for a Japanese person, Japanese is not a foreign language.
