How to use it
Connects a cause to a result that has ALREADY happened. The second clause cannot express will, a command, or an invitation.
- 「それで」 = so, as a result. The second clause is a RESULT that has already become fact: 「昨日は雨だった。
- The second clause cannot be a command/invitation — 「それで、傘を持って行きましょう」 is wrong; use 「だから」 there instead.
- In conversation it is also used to prompt someone to continue: 「それで?」 (and then what?).
Examples
It was raining yesterday. That is why I did not go to the park.
I failed the exam. As a result, I will take it again next month.
Keep in mind
- The following clause is something that has already happened.
- For commands/invitations, use 「
Common mistakes
-
Wrong
It looks like it's going to rain. So let's bring an umbrella.
The second clause is an invitation, so 「だから」 must be used.
-
Wrong
The road got wet. So it rained.
Correct
The order must be cause first, then result.
Exam tips
- 「それで」 = so, as a result (a result that has already happened); use 「だから」 for an invitation/command.
