How to use it
Narrating a story: after doing A, B happens right afterward. B is beyond the speaker's will/control.
- 「すると」 = and then. Used when RECOUNTING a story: 「ボタンを押した。 Both parts are in the past tense.
- B must be something that happens NATURALLY or is done by someone else — it cannot be the speaker's own next action: 「すると、私も出かけた」 is wrong; use 「そして」 there instead.
- Also used to draw an inference: 「すると、彼は知らなかったということですね」 (so that means he didn't know, right?).
Examples
I called her. Then she picked up right away.
I pressed this button. Then the door opened automatically.
Keep in mind
- Both clauses are usually in the た form.
- B is not a willed action of the speaker.
Common mistakes
-
Wrong
I finished my homework. Then I watched TV.
Correct
A subsequent action done deliberately by oneself uses 「
-
Wrong
I pressed the button. Then the door opened.
Correct
When narrating, the first clause must also be in the past (た) form.
Exam tips
- 「すると」 = and then (B is beyond one's will); use 「そして」 for a subsequent deliberate action.
