How to use it
Draws a LOGICAL consequence from what was just stated. Academic/report writing style — not used in casual speech.
The cause-and-effect relationship must be OBJECTIVE, derivable through reasoning: 「原料費が上がった。
- Because it is formal, the following clause CANNOT be a casual invitation or command — 「したがって、傘を持って行きましょう」 sounds off in tone; use 「だから」 there instead.
Examples
Raw material costs rose. Therefore, we will revise product prices.
Today is a public holiday. Accordingly, counter services are closed.
Keep in mind
- Formal written style.
- The following clause is an objective conclusion, not an invitation.
Common mistakes
-
It's raining. So let's bring an umbrella.
Correct
An everyday invitation uses 「だから」; 「したがって」 is too formal.
-
Wrong
I like him. So I want to marry him.
Correct
A personal, emotional reason doesn't fit with 「したがって」.
Exam tips
- 「したがって」 = therefore (logical, written); everyday speech uses 「だから」.
