How to use it
Presents two options to choose between, in a DECLARATIVE sentence. Formal, common in instructional writing.
- When connecting NOUNS, place it directly: 「英語あるいはドイツ語で話せます」.
- When connecting CLAUSES, 「か」 is required: 「映画を見るか、あるいは買い物をするかしよう」 — omitting 「か」 here is a basic mistake.
- Different from 「それとも」 (used only in questions) and 「または」 (similar meaning, more neutral). 「あるいは」 is the most literary/written.
