วิธีใช้

- This is the 'permitted NOT to do' form (V ない + てもいい). Meaning: the action is NOT mandatory — doing it is fine, and not doing it is fine too. It is the negation of the OBLIGATION ～なければならない, not the negation of ～てもいい (prohibition is ～てはいけない).
- Note the opposite logic to N4-084: ～なければならない (must do) ↔ ～なくてもいい (don't need to do). These two patterns are a complete opposite pair, and exams love pairing them in the same question.
- The "extension" compared to N5 is that this also applies to adjectives and nouns: 新しくなくてもいいです (doesn't have to be new), 高いものじゃなくてもいいです (doesn't have to be an expensive item).
- With someone of higher status, using ～なくてもかまいません or ～なくても結構です sounds more polite. But be careful: 結構です said to a customer in a different context can mean "no thanks, that's not necessary" — which can sound curt.

ข้อควรจำ
- Don't confuse ～なくてもいい (no need to do) with ～てはいけない (forbidden to do). "Not mandatory" is completely different from "not allowed".
- Japanese people often shorten it to ～なくていい in speech — this is correct and very common; it just drops も.
