• ～ているところだ is a cross-section right in the middle of an action. It fits when being asked, being called, or needing to say you're in the middle of doing something.
• Not used with an ongoing state that has no clear progression, such as 知っている or 結婚している. These verbs describe a state, not an action currently in progress.

ข้อผิดพลาดที่พบบ่อย

• ผิด私(わたし)は田中(たなか)さんを知(し)っているところです。

  ถูก私(わたし)は田中(たなか)さんを知(し)っています。

  知っている is the state of "knowing," not an action with a midpoint, so ところ is not added.
