วิธีใช้
ฮาซิล ยัง พาสตี ดาน เตอร์จาดี โอโตมาติส — ฮูคุม อาลัม, คารา เกอร์จา เมซิน, เปตุนจุก อาราห์
- と expresses an INEVITABLE relationship: whenever A happens, B always happens, without exception, regardless of anyone's will. So it's the only correct choice when talking about natural laws, machine operation, and giving directions.
- THE STRICTEST RESTRICTION among the four conditional patterns: the latter clause must ABSOLUTELY NOT be volition, a wish, an invitation, a command, or asking permission. The reason is simple: と describes something that happens automatically, and human will is not automatic.
- Three typical situations: (1) machines — 「このボタンを押すと、切符が出ます」; (2) nature — 「春になると、桜が咲きます」; (3) giving directions — 「あの角を右に曲がると、銀行があります」. These three almost always use と.
- A fourth use: the latter clause is in the PAST tense to narrate an unexpected discovery, similar to たら: 「窓を開けると、雪が降っていました」. This is where と and たら overlap.
- In addition, 「~ないと」in conversation is often left unfinished to say "you have to do something": 「早く行かないと…」(if I don't go soon, it'll be bad...). This is a very natural way of trailing off.

ข้อควรจำ

ข้อผิดพลาดที่พบบ่อย
-
ผิด日本へ行くと、寿司を食べたいです。
If I go to Japan, I want to eat sushi.
ถูก日本へ行ったら、寿司を食べたいです。
The latter clause is the speaker's wish → と is absolutely forbidden. Vietnamese learners often use と because it feels as short as their native equivalent for "then," but と is only for automatic results.
-
ผิดこのボタンを押したと、切符が出ます。
If you press this button, a ticket comes out.
ถูกこのボタンを押すと、切符が出ます。
Before と (the "whenever ... then" condition) you must use the DICTIONARY/ない form in the present tense, not the past ~た. Learners often use 押した because they think the first clause happens first and so must be past — but the before-and-after order is already built into と itself. (The form 押しますと appears only in very formal announcements; it isn't a form to learn for use.)
