Quick facts
Level (estimated, JLPT framework)N4
Romaji~ mashō ka
Meaningshall I ~? / let me ~ for you

Forming it

Offering helpV + ましょうか (subject is I)
Inviting to do togetherV + ましょうか (subject is WE)

How to use it

Proactively offers to do something for someone.

  • ~ましょうか has two meanings distinguished by context. (1) Offering help: 荷物を持ちましょうか = "shall I carry your luggage?" — only I do it. (2) Invitation: 一緒に行きましょうか = "shall we go together?" — both do it. This pattern focuses on meaning (1).
  • How to tell them apart: if there's 一緒に or the action is something both can do together, it's an invitation; if it's doing something FOR the other person (carrying things, opening a window, turning on a light), it's an offer of help.
  • With someone of higher status, elevate it using humble language: お持ちしましょうか (allow me to carry it for you). This sentence goes over very well with bosses and customers.
  • Context: with friends and peers, ~ましょうか is enough. With a boss/customer, お~しましょうか is far more polite.

Examples

  • It is hot, isn't it? Shall I open the window?

  • That looks heavy. Shall I carry your luggage?

  • You do not know the way? Shall I draw you a map?

Keep in mind

  • Answering when accepting: お願いします (please, thanks) — don't just say a blunt はい.
  • ~ましょう (without か) is a more decisive invitation, almost like "let's go!". With か it's softer because it leaves the choice to the other person.

Common mistakes

Manager, shall I carry your luggage for you?

~ませんか is an INVITATION for the other person to do it themselves — this ends up telling the department manager to carry it himself. To offer help, use ~ましょうか.

Excuse me, shall I carry your luggage?

Since the one carrying it is me, the humble form お持ちする must be used, not the honorific お持ちになる.

Exam tips

(I'll do it for you), ~ませんか (inviting you), ~ましょう (let's just do it).
