How to use it

States a reason in a soft, objective way, especially when asking permission, explaining, or declining.

  • ので connects cause and effect but places emphasis on an objective circumstance, so it sounds less pushy than から. This pattern is very natural when asking permission or politely declining something.
  • With na-adjectives and nouns, な must be used before ので. In casual conversation you may hear んで, but the standard form for learning and writing remains ので.

Examples

  • I have a slight fever, so I will take today off.

  • This room is quiet, so I can study well.

Keep in mind

  • The following clause can be a request or intention, but it's best to keep a gentle nuance: すみませんが/ので pairs well with an explanation.

Common mistakes

  • Wrong今日(きょう)は休(やす)みだので、銀行(ぎんこう)は閉(し)まっています。

    Correct今日(きょう)は休(やす)みなので、銀行(ぎんこう)は閉(し)まっています。

Nouns and na-adjectives use なので, not だので.

Exam tips

  • After a noun or na-adjective, if the blank comes right before ので, choose な.
