Signing Up for Electricity or Gas Online? Watch Out for 'Intermediary Sites'

Think you're signing up with a major utility company? You might actually be contracting with someone else entirely — Japan's consumer agency just issued a fresh warning.

Signing Up for Electricity or Gas Online? Watch Out for 'Intermediary Sites'
  • Japan's Consumer Affairs Agency and the Electricity and Gas Market Surveillance Commission warn that many people think they're signing up with a major utility online but end up contracted with a different company.
  • This usually happens by accidentally landing on an 'intermediary site' (a third party listing multiple companies) instead of the target company's own official sign-up page.
  • Before submitting an application, carefully check the company name and web address shown on screen — especially when rushing to arrange utilities for a move.

What just happened

Consumers keep reporting the same thing: they thought they'd signed up for electricity or gas with a major company online, but ended up under contract with a company they'd never heard of.

For example, one case involved someone who, while moving house, thought they'd contracted with a major electricity company online — but had actually signed with an unfamiliar one.

Another report: someone clicked the top search result intending to sign up with a major gas company, but at the final contract step, an unfamiliar company name appeared instead.

'Intermediary sites' vs. official sign-up pages

In these cases, the user likely ended up on an 'intermediary site' without realizing it. Unlike an official 'sign-up site' run directly by the electricity or gas company, an 'intermediary site' is run by a third party that bundles and presents multiple companies' services together.

'Intermediary sites' are genuinely useful for people who want to compare several companies at once. But if you already have a specific company in mind, it's important to carefully check whether you're actually on that company's own official sign-up site.

This mix-up is especially common when you're rushing to prepare for a move and just click the top search result without a second thought. Make it a habit to double-check the company name and web address shown on screen before you submit an application.

The Electricity and Gas Market Surveillance Commission and the Consumer Affairs Agency encourage anyone who finds an 'intermediary site' unclear about what it is to contact the consumer hotline or the Commission's own consultation desk.
