As of October 1, 2026, Residence Change/Renewal and Permanent Residency Fees Have Officially Gone Up
  • The flat 6,000-yen renewal fee is gone — it now scales with the granted period, from 10,000 to 75,000 yen.
  • The permanent residency fee rose from 10,000 to 200,000 yen.
  • Applications received by September 30, 2026 still got the old rate; filing online remains cheaper than filing at the counter.

The new fee has taken effect

Starting today, October 1, 2026, the fees for changing or renewing residence status and for permanent residency have officially switched to new rates. The familiar 6,000-yen fee no longer applies to newly filed applications.

The fee now depends on the period you're granted

For changing residence status or renewing your period of stay, the fee now varies with how long a period you're granted. Filing at the counter, it ranges from 10,000 yen for a short period up to as much as 75,000 yen for a long one.

Filing online makes the same tier cheaper — for example, a one-year renewal costs 33,000 yen at the counter but only 27,000 yen online.

Permanent residency fee jumps twentyfold

The fee for permanent residency jumped in one leap from 10,000 yen to 200,000 yen.

The September 30 cutoff and how you pay

Applications received by September 30, 2026 still got the old rate, even if the permit itself was issued after the calendar flipped to October.

For online applications, the fee is no longer paid with a revenue stamp but through a convenience-store or bank payment — and that payment carries its own separate handling fee, worth remembering.

People facing financial hardship who are recognized as needing humanitarian consideration may get the fee reduced — up to 10,000 yen for a change or renewal, up to 20,000 yen for permanent residency.
